Sciatica is a condition caused when a torn or protruding disc in the lower back disturbs or compresses the Sciatic nerve (the largest nerve in the body), causing a range of problems and often significant discomfort.

Symptoms of Sciatica

Symptoms may include, but are not limited to:

  • lower back pain – with radiation down one or both legs.
  • discomfort, limited movement, and weakness of your lower limb, leg and foot.
  • Tingling and numb sensations down one or both legs.

Increased severity is usually due to repeated bending, lifting, or twisting movements, and can also be irritated by simple actions like sitting, sneezing and coughing.

Sciatica is equally prevalent amongst men and women, and is experienced most in those between 30 and 50 years of age. Manual workers, pregnant women and desk bound office workers are also susceptible to developing sciatica.
